The Marigold Effect

Many years ago I learned about the concept of “companion planting.” We use companion planting in our Little Red Schoolhouse garden as a way to teach learners about symbiotic relationships, friendship, kindness, and of course gardening!

One of my favorite lessons of the year is the “Marigold Effect.” When it comes to companion planting, Marigolds are best! They are planted near other plants & vegetables and protect them against harmful pests, insects, weeds, and fungus. Marigolds help support, protect, and encourage the other plants to thrive and grow!

We have Marigolds in our homes, schools, and communities as well. People that mentor, support, teach, and empower us to grow & thrive! Our learners are encouraged to think and write about ways that they can be a Marigold in their communities!

Who will you be a Marigold for today?
