Butterfly Life Cycle

We’re kicking off another spring life cycle project with our Butterfly STEM Journals!

Our little learners are reading, writing, and learning all about our caterpillars and the amazing metamorphosis of turning into butterflies! Follow along from home by downloading your Butterfly STEM Journal today from our shop. Come join our adventure in learning!

During our butterfly life cycle study, students observed our very hungry caterpillars quickly grow into big fat caterpillars just like the caterpillar in our text by Eric Carle.

Creating rich, hands-on learning experiences allows our learners to have meaningful text to self and text to world connections, helping to foster a love for writing & learning!

“The Very Hungry Caterpillar” Read-Aloud

Join us for a fun read-aloud of one of our favorites: Eric Carle’s “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” to go with our Caterpillar/Butterfly Life Cycle project.
Follow along with us with our Butterfly STEM journals on our adventure in learning!

Take a peek below at our STEM journals in action!

Molt! Molt! Molt!

After our caterpillars “molt” 4-5 times, we move into the 3rd stage of the life cycle process called the “pupa or chrysalis stage.” Our students enjoyed observing our caterpillars in each stage of their development.

Time to Fly!

Students observed our newly emerged butterflies in their habitat and picked fresh flowers from our garden to feed them.

Operation Pollination!

Our students have loved spending time in our butterfly garden over the last few weeks.

We learned that “milkweed” is a vital resource for both the endangered Monarch Butterfly and our environment! Students also learned about the very special “symbiotic” relationship between the milkweed and the monarch and that by planting milkweed in our garden, we do our part to protect the monarch butterfly from extinction.

Butterfly Life Cycle Wrap Up

From egg to caterpillar to butterfly! Students enjoyed another fun life cycle project this spring in our Little Red Schoolhouse! Learners completed their journals, wrote stories of their butterflies emerging, and released our butterflies into our milkweed garden.
