The Marigold Effect: Students got to participate in a concept called ‘companion planting’ placing certain vegetables and plants near each other to improve growth and prevent disease and fungus. Among companion plants, marigolds are one of the best! Plant a marigold beside most any garden veggie and they will be protected from harmful pests and weeds, and grow big, healthy, and strong. Life is much like the garden. We have a choice to be a marigold or a weed. Students learned all about the positive effects of marigolds, making good choices, and why we would want to stay away from weeds that can infect us. Students agreed that being a marigold and having a positive effect on others, supporting, and encouraging them so they can thrive in this garden we call life is good for all of us!❤️🌼📝
Operation Pollination! Today’s students learned that milk weed is a critical resource for our native Ca. environment, and for Monarch butterfly’s! The nectar in the milkweed is the ONLY food source that the caterpillars of the Monarch butterfly eat! After learning and writing all about milkweed, students got to plant milkweed in our butterfly garden to help the endangered monarchs! ❤️🐛🦋
In the Little Red Schoolhouse we grow many different varieties of veggies and herbs, but some of the MOST important things we are growing in the hearts and minds of our students are Kindness, love, and empathy! ❤️🥦🍋🍓🥒🥕🌽🍅🍆🌻
As part of our thematic unit of study, students get to read informational text, learn all about beets, and pull out important information to write about.
My students and children got to study the AMAZING health benefits of both carrots and beets, by planting, researching, harvesting, writing, and finally, taste testing these delicious root veggies!!
